Customers are really everything to your business. If you get this right in your business it will be stronger. Many businesses spend a lot of money to get customers but they don’t thin about the long term and retaining those customers.

Retaining your customers is equally important as gaining them in the first place. You’ve spent all this money on getting them in the first place but if you can develop a relationship with them they will keep coming back. They will also tell other people about you because they trust and respect you.

Let me give you an example. I go to a coffee shop every day for my coffee. I’ve been doing this for about a year. I do this because I feel comfortable with the people in there. We usually have a bit of banter, talk about our families and our business. Gradually we get to know each other and I feel comfortable going there. But previous to this I was going to another coffee shop. There was no banter and I didn’t feel like they really cared about me. Consequently, I didn’t really care about them. There was nothing to keep me going back.

There are many ways to look after your customers. Be spontaneous about it. Not just at Christmas time. Show them that you care about them. Thank them for doing business with you.

One way of doing this is to give them something unexpected, like a discount from one of your services or a random gift to tell them how awesome they are.
